Educating healthcare workers for the future is more important than ever. Colleges and universities are investing in physical spaces to improve health sciences education facilities. Many projects focus on creating simulation labs that reflect today’s hospital, clinic and home environments.
The Faculty of Health is re-thinking its multiuse learning labs at Fanshawe College. This project is an investment in both physical space and a commitment to elevating the quality of healthcare education. By creating a state-of-the-art simulation lab, Fanshawe College will equip its PSW and DSW students with the skills and knowledge needed to excel in their future careers. The redesigned lab will serve as a beacon of innovative healthcare education, reflecting the college’s dedication to nurturing the healthcare workers of tomorrow.
The learning lab at Fanshawe College will be redesigned to reflect both a hospital and a home environment for faculty, DSW & PSW students. The design focuses on utilizing technology to provide distinct learning experiences in each vignette. Each vignette is colour-coded for its specific purpose. The layout offers flexibility, supporting a multi-use environment. Considering the high traffic and long-term use of the space, durability and ease of maintenance are key drivers of the design. Acoustic privacy is addressed with sound-absorbing materials and effective divisions of subspaces.
A key focus of the redesign is to simulate a residential home environment to allow students to hone their skills in a setting that replicates assisting patients. By navigating the challenges and nuances of in-home care in a controlled, educational setting, students are better prepared for the realities of their future roles.
