This project focuses on the redesign of the Laura Secord School, located on Niagara on the Lake. The objective was to transform the first floor into a public space, while the second floor will serve as private student residences during the school year and rental units during the summer. The redesign aims to preserve the original structure of the building, while incorporating new, sustainable, materials and adjustable, collapsible furniture. The primary clients for this project are the students that will reside on the second floor. In this group project, my responsibilities included creating the design of the building in Revit and rendering images.
The Laura Secord School has been re-envisioned as a community hub for members of Niagara on the Lake. The redesign prioritizes sustainability by creating an adaptable space that utilizes key features of the existing heritage structure. To ensure the most sustainable design, minimal amounts of new materials were employed. A library and cafe was chosen to be integrated into the first floor, as the second floor is already catered to post-secondary students. Students need a space where they can interact with the community while also being ensured that their studies remain undisturbed during the day. The library shelves are designed with curvilinear shapes to bring a sense of flow to the center of the library. Additionally, the café offers a variety of seating arrangements for individual study to larger tables for group discussions.
